Join leader Susan Mittelstadt for a bird outing to this biologically rich area. The site includes a variety of habitats along the Mimbres River, recently known for attracting rare bird species. Be prepared for a river crossing.
RSVP required, as space is limited! We will be capping the number of participants to 12, so please email your RSVP to birdallianceswnm@gmail.com.
Carpooling from Silver City? Susan recommends carpooling since there is limited parking at the River Ranch. Meet at the WNMU Fine Arts Theater parking lot under the solar panels, ready to leave at 7:15. If not planning to carpool, please let us know with your RSVP.
Getting there: First find the entrance to City of Rocks State Park and then continue NE on Highway 61 for three miles. Just past the Luna County sign, look for New Mexico Game and Fish signage on the south side of the road at what appears to be a new residence and just before mile marker 7.
Entrance requirements: This WMA requires one NM Habitat Stamp per 4 people. We normally have plenty, but keep in mind when planning with your friends and/or let us know if you do not have one.
Accessibility info: Closed gate across drive at entrance. Limited grass parking available. Need to pass through narrow angled gate and cross Mimbres River to access the main birding area (depth of river varies seasonally). Flat dirt roadway runs the 3-mile length of property; uneven surfaces and some steep slopes to access pond, river, and velvet ash groves. Cattle may be present. No restrooms or drinking water available.
