Join Silver City’s 2nd Bioblitz in Celebration of Earth Day: April 24-27, 2026
Our April outing will be part of the four-day iNaturalist City Nature Challenge 2026. This international community science project is aimed at documenting the biodiversity in urban areas. Every observation helps build a biodiversity database that aids understanding and protection of local species. Silver City participated for the first time last year, with our project placing 13th for cities our size. Let’s see if we can better last year’s effort and put Grant County biodiversity and its observers on the map!
Coordinated locally by the Silver City Watershed Keepers, the project is open to everyone, from expert naturalists to budding outdoor enthusiasts.
From April 24-27, participants will find and upload photographs of plant and animal species in Silver City and the surrounding Grant County area.
Taking part is easy. The iNaturalist app is free and easy to download to any smart device. Participants simply find a wild organism, take a photo or sound recording, and upload. Once posted, an online community of naturalists work to confirm species identification.
Bird Alliance will be supporting three guided outings during this event:
Saturday, April 25th
8:00 – 10:00 am, San Vicente Trail
9:00 – 11:00 am, Bayard Public Library
Sunday, April 26th
8:00 - 10:00 am, Silva Creek Botanical Garden and Waterworks (with support from our friends at the Gila Native Plant Society)
Silver City Watershed Keepers and Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy will also host events that weekend, including some evening outings and an iNaturalist training.
