NM Dept of Wildlife to Host “Big Year” Contest

The NM Department of Wildlife is launching its inaugural version of a “Big Year” contest for birders focused on birds found in New Mexico in 2026. Modeled after the Kansas Big Year competition, NM Wildlife is hoping to inspire folks to get outside, enjoy natural wonders, and be inspired by the beauty and diversity of birds in our great state.

For a “Big Year,” birders commit to seeing and recording as many bird species as they can during a single calendar year.

To participate, you’ll need to head to the NM Big Year website to register

You’ll also need to keep track of your bird sightings in eBird and submit quarterly bird species lists. Prizes will be awarded to top participants in each of the following categories:

  • Youth (17 and under)

  • Adult (18-64) Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced

  • Senior (65 and up) Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced

With so many great birds and birders in our area, no doubt SW New Mexico will show up!
