CONSERVATION IS KEY

We’re continuing to build on the strength of cooperative efforts. As a small organization these efforts can increase our impact and build longer term relationships for future conservation needs,

In October, we met with New Mexico Department of Wildlife staff and Mesilla Valley Audubon to walk the Red Rock Wildlife Management Area (WMA), discussing what is needed to make the WMA more birder-friendly. We’ll have more details on this in the next newsletter as decisions are made. The Red Rock WMA is an amazing place during spring migration so increasing access and information about it will be great for all of us and the birds we love.

The other cooperative project that is beginning to take shape in the Gila National Forest will involve working with Forest Service staff and, potentially, assistance from Audubon Southwest. A site visit to the Gila Bird Area (an Important Bird Area, or IBA, within the forest) is planned for early November.

We’ll also begin work soon on our new for 2027 conservation priority: Lights Out/Dark Sky, which will tie in nicely with our ongoing work on Bird-Friendly Windows.

If you would like to get involved with any of these initiatives, please contact us at birdallianceswnm@gmail.com!
