Hermosa: Ghost Town
Tucked away next to the Aldo Leopold Wilderness lies Hermosa, an old ghost town being revitalized by Natural Curiosity into a research station, outdoor learning space, and birding destination! Hermosa is remote, about two hours from Truth or Consequences, making it a hidden gem for birding. This place truly has it all! Riparian cottonwoods with plenty of Yellow-breasted Chats, desert scrub with Montezuma Quail, mixed coniferous forest with a giant flock of Pinyon Jays, rocky cliffs with White-throated Swifts, and miles and miles of high elevation trails I’ve yet to explore! Cliff Swallows nest directly on the porch of the main building, and at least four species of hummingbirds flock to the feeders. Mule deer, coyotes, elk, and javelina all call Hermosa their home, and with some luck, you might catch a glimpse!
Amenities are rustic, with a fantastic old-west charm. Stay in one of their guest rooms starting at $45/night or camp under the stars for an unforgettable night! The road to Hermosa is rocky and unpaved, so a vehicle with high clearance and at least AWD is recommended, but the road also has several places that are great to stop and bird. If you’re interested in booking or stopping by for the day, contact Natural Curiosity at info@natural-curiosity.org or call (575) 342-1323.
