New eBird Feature: Checklist Media

The folks at Cornell Ornithology Lab have added a new feature to eBird, enabling users to go beyond photos and recordings of birds for outings. With Checklist Media, eBirders can upload photos and recordings in three additional categories: Habitat & Soundscapes, Experiences, and Other Animals.

Entries to the Habitat and Soundscapes category can include the birds observed there and can potentially be used at Cornell to track long-term changes to habitat conditions or show connections between birds and their environments. The Experience category is intended to show what the birding location is like (e.g. trail maps, signs, landmarks). These experience images may appear on Hotspot pages in the future so that others can see what to expect when visiting. The Other Animals category is used to document wildlife other than birds. Sound recordings in particular will be used to help train Merlin Sound ID

Beyond contributions to science and eBird, these media can help to round out your eBirding experience, making it more like a personal journal of an outing.
